The "Toxin" Myth

Ever hear this one?  "Drink water after a massage, because massage releases toxins".  Well, I am here to tell you that's not even a little bit true!  You body has a very efficient way of ridding itself of toxins (the liver & kidneys as an example).

So where did this idea ever come from?  Who started this rumor?  I don't know, but I would bet it was a massage therapist somewhere working to drum up more business.  If this were true, then wouldn't massage be possibly "bad"?  I mean, willfully releasing these toxins into our system could upset the homeostasis our body strives for!  And what about the whole "water will rid them from you"?  Hmmmm, how so?  And what exactly are these "toxins" that are released?

I haven't heard anyone tell me specifically on this one.  Water is an essential part of life (DUH!).  I am a believer in the 1/2 your weight in ounces every day.  Water will also help with keeping muscles energized (not to mention our brains, given they are around 73% water!).

The bottom line?  Massage is a great way to relieve tired, sore, achy muscles and to increase range of motion.  Water is needed by every cell in your body.  We have a system built in that handles detoxification, so don't worry about massage being a cause of these unknown "toxins" entering your body!  Speaking of massage, it doesn't HAVE to be so expensive!  You can take care of it yourself using a wall, a desk, a floor, or on pretty much any solid surface using a Knot Away!  Enjoy the rest of your day!
